going, going...

going bovine, the Printz Award winner for best young adult book, is going nowhere fast. I want to like it, I really do...but after about 100 pages I could easily put it down and grab the half-dozen other books clamoring for my attention on the bookshelf.

Today, I shall force myself to plow ahead and get this one under my belt so I can move on!

  1. Finally finished it....it was a chore. I never really got going with going bovine. I found myself wondering what the other choices were for the Printz committee and what, exactly, their argument was for picking this book above the others. Granted, there were passages that were beautifully written and profound. But most of it was just pedestrian...it had that edgy feel of "Teen Lit" with drugs, sex, swearing, attitudinal teens, roadtrips, annoying and detached parents. So cliche to me. Not earth-shattering stuff in my opinion. I can't see this book standing the test of time, and it was a little too Holden Caulfield for my taste. I never liked Catcher in the Rye either, for the record, so that shows me my taste! Oh well.
